another ho hum sunday in Hawaii

Im so disappointed that the family has not been using this site to post some reflections or stories about the highlights of their day or week. And now it's another Sunday in Paradise, and Papa and I are slowly revving up for the usual puttering around the house. Of course we try to start off with a breakfast of our favorite Costco walnut cranberry bread which I like toasted with a generous topping of goat cheese. Add a cur of Tasters Choice coffee and, if available some fruit. Apple banana, orange, pineapple, Asian pear, Fiji apple, cantaloupe, watermelon, avocado -- whichever ruit we have stashed in our fridge. Today we're having half a papaya each. Ive never tasted papaya this sweet elsewhere. I stopped buying papayas when we lived in Virginia or Salt Lake. They are so bland and tasteless and not worth buying at all. We are so lucky to be able to get these delicious papayas from Costco in Hawaii. Cost about $6.99 for 5 papyas in a box. .

With breakfast we peruse the Sunday New York Times and Star Advertiser. Every time Papa picks up the Star advertiser he gives it a quick whack, barking out his frustration with the paper. "This is such a trashy paper!" His anger is usually directed at the Advertiser's use of a half page commercial advertisement in front of the front page, which I don't think other newspapers do at all. But maybe because of the slowdown of business for newspapers, they've resorted to selling the front of the front page for more money.

I usually go through the front pages quickly to check out interesting headlines. If any story catches my attention, I would go to that page and try to read the article. NYT stories tend to be quite long so I do a quick reading technique I learned in freshman English in U.P. Glance through the paragraph and pick out the key words. No need to read every word otherwise you end up plodding along without really getting a sense of what you're reading. I like to check out the Arts and Leisure Page for movie and art reviews,

and go through the Sunday Review which carries the paper's editorial and commentaries. Sometimes when I feel lazy about getting on with the day, I go through the love stories in the wedding pages. These are not written in the usual society page style but more like short stories of how couples met, what led them to the altar, etc. The more interesting stories are about old people finding love late in life, biracial or same sex couples who had to overcome obstacles with their families, community, or society. I never thought I'd find the "Society Page" as worth reading
